It's been a few years since my last group of updates to this journal. I just posted an entry about attending C2E2 (Chicago Comics & Entertainment Expo) this year (2019). In this post, I'll fill you in one what I've been up to since 2016. I'm still installing furniture into military (my day job) but I'm hoping to make this is my last year in that line of work. I still feel good doing the work but I'm getting older and I need to think about the future. I'll probably get a different job back home early next year. I live in Bloomington, Indiana.

I made it to C2E2 (Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo) this year (2019). Along with Wizard World Chicago Comic Con (2010), Indiana Comic Con (2014) and Awesome Con Indianapolis (2014), this makes my fourth comic book convention.
C2E2 was huge. It's the biggest convention I've been to so far. The massive venue (McCormick Place) was packed with fans and cosplayers of every sort. I had no idea, until I got there, that it was the 10th anniversary of the event. It was my first time arriving to a convention early in the morning and waiting in line to get in the doors. children of the shadows:

Children of the Shadows has been published after all these years! I completed this six page story, written by Sean Leonard, at the request of an editor from another company back in 2014. When the original anthology fell through, I kept my eyes open for another open call horror anthology. Children of the Shadows has finally seen publication in print (as bonus content) in Out of the Blue: A Collection of Campfire Tales from Stache Publishing. I did the pencils, inks, colors and hand lettering for this story. Thank you, Stache Publishing for accepting our submission and making this happen!

I've always loved your work. I wish you find yourself at a time and place where you could focus on nothing but producing comics.
It will happen eventually. I just hope there's enough time left afterwards to write and draw everything that I want to create. There's so much I want to do.

Saw that you went to awesome con. I live in the Indy area and have friends that are part of the Louisville Cartoonist Society (www.louisvillecartoonistsociet…. They put out a yearly anthology. Now it isn't paid work (for anyone) as any profits get donated to charity, but it is a way to get a short story published and have something for a resume piece. This year's theme is "fantasy"
I'm a member and have written a few scripts for this year's anthology. I'm kinda out recruiting, but more like just trying to spread the word. They would rather have Louisville/Southern Indiana local artists, so I you know anyone from that area, let 'em know. They gave me the OK to snag a non-Louisville artist even though I don't live there anymore, as I have strong ties to the area living there for almost 20 years. If you want to see any scripts, they are reviewing them, but will be putting them up soon I think, or just message me back and I can send you mine.
Either way, my writing partner and I are on the same journey you are, just trying to make some fun comics to hopefully get them in the hands of editors and more importantly readers.

Hey, Lyle. Sorry for the delayed response; I haven't had access to my laptop for a few weeks now. I was born and raised in Terre Haute, Indiana -- not sure if that counts as Southern Indiana -- but I'm currently living in Indianapolis. I did attend awesome.con this year. It was a good time. I have been doing short stories for small press anthologies this past two years -- contributing to six volumes representing two companies thus far -- and I'm really kind of thinking I should take a break from it.
I appreciate the invitation but I can't do any more short stories right now. But, thank you.
The experience of getting published in the small press has been exciting and I learned a little bit about the logistics of it all in the process but contributing to these anthologies doesn't really seem to be furthering my career all that much -- which is, frankly, my only goal in contributing to such anthologies. It's not fun for me to draw things that I don't care that much about when I have half a dozen projects that I care deeply about sitting on the shelf -- if you know what I mean. Even the stories I've both written and drawn myself for small press anthologies were not that "fun" because I had to cram myself into themes and genres that I don't care much about (Steampunk, horror, etc.). Working with other writers was always a positive experience but I found it somewhat limiting. In the future, if I collaborate on a project with someone, I'd much rather collaborate with another artist than another writer. My goal isn't to freelance or to illustrate -- I have no interest in doing either of those things -- I want to tell my own stories. So... this winter, I'm starting production on a large project of my own. I'll be sending pitches to companies early next year.
That's where I'm going. No looking back.
