50 GIRLS 50: Frank Cho & Doug Murray talent se

Sun Oct 4, 2009, 8:56 PM
A little over a week ago, I started preparing an entry for the talent search contest Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows, Marvel Comics) and Doug Murray (Stargate) are conducting over on the Image Comics forum. The winner of the contest is to become the artist for their new mini-series from Image Comics, 50 GIRLS 50. The deadline for entry is over but you can follow the results here: [link]

Details on the contest: [link]

I was installing furniture in New Mexico but I still gave it a shot. Between installing, traveling and drawing my entry, I worked about 115 hours that week. I drew for about 25 hours in all, most of it late at night and on the stairs of the hotel so I wouldn't keep my roommate up all night. Obviously, I didn't get it done but I gave it a shot. I went ahead and submitted the unfinished pencils. I was just happy to participate at that point. This first page isn't too bad. The rest is sloppy and rushed. I'm not too proud of the quality but I'm glad I made the effort.

I'm John, a 37 year old aspiring comic book artist from Indiana and I've been working hard to develop the chops. I don't have much experience yet but I've been studying textbooks and tutorials for years as I've practiced and improved upon my craft. I think I'm about ready to give it a go. Look for some finished artwork in my portfolio in the coming months. Thanks for the interest.

FREELANCE WORK:

These are my prices for freelance commission work. The prices I've set reflect the fact that I'm not yet published or well established in the industry. They represent standard entry-level prices according to the extensive research I've done on the subject. Still, feel free to negotiate, I might cut you a break.

I am currently available for work. I'm looking to stock my portfolio with finished artwork of any kind.

I've been experimenting with a variety of styles but I think I've nailed down my default style (samples coming soon). I can pencil, ink, color and letter my own projects. I can collaborate. I can meet deadlines and conduct myself in a professional manner. Thank you for your consideration.

PRICES:

Sequential art pages for comic books and graphic novels (11x17):

page: pencil --- --- --- $60
page: pencil and ink --- --- --- $80
page: full color --- --- --- $100

cover: pencil --- --- --- $80
cover: pencil and ink --- --- --- $100
cover: full color --- --- --- $120

[Since a standard monthly comic book is 22 pages plus a cover, one full color issue of a comic book from me would cost you $2,320. If I'm also writing, lettering, editing and formatting the book the price will go up.]

Black and white (pencil and ink) commissions and pin-ups (11x17).

half page: single character --- --- --- $20
half page: two or more characters --- --- --- $30
half page: full scene --- --- --- $40

full page: single character --- --- --- $30
full page: two or more characters --- --- --- $50
full page: full scene --- --- --- $80

Full color commissions and pin-ups:

half page: single character --- --- --- $30
half page: two or more characters --- --- --- $40
half page: full scene --- --- --- $50

full page: single character --- --- --- $60
full page: two or more characters --- --- --- $80
full page: full scene --- --- --- $100

GOALS: My ultimate goal is to work for a large independent company writing and drawing my own ongoing series. I'm not interested in signing any long-term contracts with any big corporations. I really want to tell my own stories. I want to have full creative control and retain the rights to my work. I want the freedom to do side projects. I'll work with anybody who has a fair offer and a fun project.
